Town hall recap: hundreds of residents turn out for the $75,000 plan

NYCHA PARTY · June 27, 2026

Last week, more than 400 NYCHA residents packed into our first major town hall to talk about one thing: how to turn public housing into a launchpad into ownership.

What residents asked

  • "Is this a loan or a grant?" — The $75,000 benefit is designed as a grant to be applied at closing, with affordability covenants to keep homes resident-owned.
  • "Does it replace my subsidy?" — No. The plan complements NYCHA tenancy during the path to ownership, with honest transition rules modeled on the CHA program.
  • "Can I really afford a mortgage?" — That's what the homebuyer education and counseling piece is for — we'll get you ready before you sign anything.

What happened next

Residents signed up to organize in 12 developments across Brooklyn, the Bronx, Manhattan, and Queens. New volunteers joined our get-out-the-vote and homebuyer-education teams. And the questions we couldn't answer on the spot became the seed of our FAQ.

The movement is real, it is resident-led, and it is growing. Join us and come to the next event.
