The FHA Homes Program: 300+ NYCHA residents already own their homes
NYCHA PARTY · July 18, 2026
Most New Yorkers have never heard of the FHA Homes Program. It is one of the best-kept secrets in public housing — and one of the strongest arguments for our plan.
Since the late 1970s, NYCHA and HUD have used the program to transfer FHA-repossessed homes to residents. The result: more than 300 NYCHA residents have become homeowners through this program. Real families. Real deeds. Real wealth built in communities that were told to wait.
Why it matters for the $75,000 plan
The program proves three things:
- Residents can and will own — given the opportunity, NYCHA families become homeowners and neighborhood anchors.
- The infrastructure exists — NYCHA, HPD, HUD, and nonprofit partners already run the programs that put residents into homes.
- Funding is the missing piece — many FHA Homes need capital repair, and qualifying families need down-payment and closing-cost help. That is exactly what our $75,000 benefit covers.
The precedent next door
Chicago's Housing Authority already gives residents a $20,000 down-payment grant. If Chicago can do $20,000, New York can do $75,000 — and give the families who built this city the stake they have earned.
